Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown toenail is a common condition that occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the skin. It usually affects the big toe. Ingrown toenails are very painful and may lead to inflammation and infection. Conditions that reduce blood flow to the feet, such as diabetes, may lead to further complications from ingrown toenails.

Causes

There are a number of factors that can cause ingrown toenails. Ill-fitting shoes that put pressure on the toes, trimming nails with rounded edges, thick nails, curved nails, and toe injuries can all cause ingrown toenails.

Symptoms

Ingrown toenails are generally painful and cause swelling and redness. If not treated, an ingrown toenail can lead to infection.

Diagnosis

Physicians will diagnose ingrown toenails by reviewing symptoms and conducting an examination of the foot. Further testing or imaging is not necessary.

Treatment

Home remedies such as soaking feet in warm water, placing cotton or dental floss under the toenail to help it grow above the skin edge, and choosing new footwear are usually effective in treating ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails that are severe or infected should be treated professionally with antibiotics and procedures such as splinting or nail removal.
