A stroke will change a patient’s life in some way, but with skilled physicians and helpful stroke therapy services, it doesn’t have to be devastating. Many stroke patients continue to live happy, productive lives once they learn how to manage and control the effects of the stroke. A patient’s quality of life can be improved … one step at a time.

Physical rehabilitation and mental health therapy can assist stroke patients.

Basic Facts about Strokes

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. A misconception is that, because they occur suddenly, there’s little you can do to prevent them.

But here’s a statistic that may change your beliefs: four out of five strokes can be prevented.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is suddenly blocked or bursts. As a result, the brain does not get the appropriate amount of oxygen, and brain cells die.

They most often are due to clots within a blood vessel, clots that break off from another part of the body and go to the brain, or narrowing of the blood vessels. In a small percentage of the cases, a stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts and bleeds into the brain, known as a hemorrhagic stroke.

Signs of a stroke include trouble speaking; numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of movement in the face, leg, or arm; confusion; sudden, severe headaches; loss of coordination; and vision changes.

In the event of a stroke, call 911 or get to a hospital as soon as possible to avoid permanent damage, which may include paralysis, loss of speech, impaired behavior or emotions, and memory loss.

Stroke therapy services can assist patients mentally, socially, and physically.

Stroke therapy can be used to improve patients’ overall quality of life.
